PRIDE Agriculture SBU consists of Sugarcane, Citrus, Cattle, and Land Management, four vastly different industries ranging in distance from as far south as the Everglades, all the way north to the Florida-Georgia state line. All of the industries sell their products and services on a contractual basis to a few specific customers; PRIDE Land Management provides services for state owned lands leased to PRIDE.

Southern Florida Industries:

  • PRIDE Sugarcane operates in partnership with United States Sugar Corporation (USSC), the largest sugarcane grower, processor and refiner in the United States. With approximately 3,300 acres of farm land, PRIDE provides 100,000 tons of sugarcane each year to USSC. In 2009, PRIDE Sugarcane completed a move into a new building that put the Industry Office, Maintenance Shop, and Machinery and Equipment Storage under one roof.PRIDE's inmate workers receive USSC certified training as Farm Machinery Operators as well as training in Farm Equipment Repair, Combination Welding, and Diesel and Gas Engine Mechanics. PRIDE's inmate workers also plant and cultivate sugarcane, mow, and perform farm equipment and mechanical repair.

Sugarcane is considered one of nature's most environmentally friendly crops, because it requires little fertilizer or pesticides. Long considered an industry leader in environmental issues, United States Sugar Corporation has the newest cane sugar refinery and the first fully-integrated cane sugar milling and refining factory in the United States. They supply nearly 10% of the sugar produced in America and provide a full spectrum of sugar products — from 2-pound consumer bags to 200,000-pound bulk rail cars of sugar to the food processing industry. USSC runs its raw sugar mill and refinery on bagasse, the residual cane fiber from the milling process, making them energy self-sufficient. Sugarcane is a clean, green and renewable energy source.

  • PRIDE Citrus produces Hamlin and Valencia oranges to sell to local juice processors for distribution throughout the United States. In 2005, PRIDE Citrus became one of the first growers to adopt the practice of fighting greening and citrus canker with an aggressive nutritional program. Since starting that program PRIDE’s yields have been increasing and, in 2009, recorded the highest pound solids for its fruit in its 25-year history.

Inmates at PRIDE Citrus receive training, certified by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences, in citrus equipment operation, equipment maintenance and repair, diesel and gas mechanics, welding, low volume irrigation, fertilizer/pesticide application, scouting and pest identification, grove safety, tree planting and care, harvesting, etc..

  • PRIDE Cattle operates in partnership with various private beef cattle operations throughout the state. PRIDE inmate workers train and carry out operations at PRIDE Cattle South (Hendry CI), PRIDE Cattle North (Union CI), and PRIDE Cattle West (Apalachee CI).

PRIDE Cattle inmate workers receive training that is certified by the Florida Department of Education in farm machinery operation, livestock production, livestock health, livestock handling, hay and seed production, pasture management, and horsemanship. In 2009, all three cattle operations had over a 90% pregnancy rate. PRIDE Cattle is also dedicated to the eradication of all invasive plants species on their land and works closely with IFAS and the local county extension service.

  • PRIDE Land Management oversees approximately 15,000 acres of state owned forestland leased to PRIDE in four Florida counties. The land is being utilized to maintain a sustainable forest inventory. PRIDE Forestry maintains the health and productivity of the forest in its care with foresight and precaution, relying on established best management practices and an attitude of attentiveness and respect for the land. Some of the trees are harvested for use as lumber.

A PRIDE inmate working in land management will be involved in all aspects of forestry from reforestation, prescribe burning, road maintenance to learning how to operate dozers and motor graders and workers receive accreditation from the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau, American Wood Protection Association and the Florida Department of Transportation.

At the heart of PRIDE Land Management’s duties is the preservation of the health of the land under our care. PRIDE’s management plan is attentive to rare or endangered species and ecosystems, soil and water conservation, and recreational use of the land by the public. Florida’s generations will continue to find these forests well taken care of while in the capable hands of PRIDE and its inmate workers.
